Rio Claro ASJA Primary School Celebrates 60 years 23-01-2013

Rio Claro ASJA Primary school

The first three ASJA schools were opened in January 1953 in Charlieville, Carapichaima and Rio Claro. In 1954, the Barrackpore ASJA School was built. These were followed by schools in Princes Town (1955), San Fernando (1956), and Point Fortin (1959). These schools were initially simple structure built by private funds raised by the local community. (Tiab Rahaman, personal interview, 2007). With subsequent government assistance, the initial structures were subsequently replaced by the more elaborate structures that exist today.

What do people do?

At Eid al-Adha, many Muslims make a special effort to pray and listen to a sermon at a mosque. They also wear new clothes, visit family members and friends and may symbolically sacrifice an animal in an act known as qurbani. This represents the animal that Ibrahim sacrificed in the place of his son.

In some traditionally Muslim countries, families or groups of families may purchase an animal known as udhiya, usually a goat or sheep, to sacrifice, but this is not common or legal in many parts of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States or many other countries. In these countries, groups of people may purchase a whole carcass from a butcher or slaughterhouse and divide it amongst themselves or just buy generous portions of meat for a communal meal on Eid-al-Adha. People also give money to enable poorer members of their local community and around the world to eat a meat-based meal.

In the period around Eid al-Adha, many Muslims travel to Mecca and the surrounding area in Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. Package holidays are organized from many countries. Muslims may plan and save for many years to enable them to take part in this event, which is one of the five pillars of Islam

Eid al-Adha in 2013 is on Tuesday, the 15th of October.

Based on sightability in North America, in 2013 Eid al-Adha will start in North America a day later - on Wednesday, the 16th of October.

Note that in the Muslim calander, a holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day, so observing Muslims will celebrate Eid al-Adha on the sunset of Monday, the 14th of October.

School website

A school website is any website built, designed, and maintained by or for a school. Many school websites share certain characteristics, and some educators have developed guidelines to help schools create the best and most useful websites they can.

[1]
Possible functions of a school website include:
Displaying student projects
Providing information on homework and current class assignments
Directing visitors to other resources on the web
Providing a forum for teachers, administrators, students, and parents to exchange information such as news and calendars of events
Introducing people who don't know much about the school (such as parent or students who are considering moving into the district, community members who don't have children, and teachers seeking employment) to its current events and general culture
Showing that a school is excellent with regard to sciences and new media in comparison to competitive schools
Providing a platform for internal school learning activities
Displaying school cirruculum and courses
Providing staff and students with an entrance and front-end to documents and resources hosted locally

Cyberproofing - Protecting Our Children

What is Cyberproofing?

CyberProofing is the act of educating youth and parents/guardians about the high-tech and information age with respect to the dangers, social networking, bullying, predators, and privacy that exist on-line.

What is CyberBullying?

CyberBullying may start at school and/or online and can lead to alienation - this may be coupled with a typical rocky home life for adolescents and teens feeling misunderstood. The most important thing to consider is your response. By calmly telling the child to turn off the screen (not the computer and do not re-start the computer) you can review the content of the message and probably determine the path and author of the harassing message. It is important to note that keeping the page up will assist in tracking the site and path to the site. It is also important to develop this trust with your students. (

What Can You Do?

Simply... become educated through printed resources, Internet resources, and by attending presentations & workshops. Educate your children and setup cyber guidelines! Awareness is the key to safety. Be-CYBER-Safe.com has provided numerous resources and tools on cyberproofing and are also available to present Internet Safety workshops to the public & private schools and school councils in the Ottawa district.
