History

History is anything that is past recorded, weather about culture, food or people.

History is also about all the remaining facts of past time that is extincted to this day. plenty of people use history.

History tells us about the people, places and events of the past, arranged in chronological order.It tells us about our ancestors - their lifestyles, occupations, customs and traditions, religious beliefs, social and political systems and cultural patterns. it also tells us about their problems, aspirations as well as their achievements.

The day was October 31st, the year 1935 and the Legislative Council of Trinidad and Tobago had passed an ordinance to incorporate certain persons as Trustees of the Anjuman Sunnat ul Jamaat Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASJA) with the four Incorporated Trustees being Syed Mohammed Hosein [First President], John Mohammed [First Vice President] with Buckredee Meah and Mustapha Khan as Trustees.  Today, seventy (70) years later ASJA continues to be the largest single Muslim organisation in Trinidad and Tobago providing the community with leadership, guidance, maturity and stability which has been responsible for recognition by the national community and successive Governments over the years since its humble, yet auspicious beginning in 1935.

Past Presidents of ASJA 

The following roster of the men who served honourably in the role as President of the Anjuman Sunnatul Jamaat Association (ASJA) of Trinidad and Tobago.  The list is sourced from ASJA's 70th Anniversary Souvenir Magazine 1935 - 2005.

PASS PRESIDENT OF ASJA

Imam Syed Mohammed Hosein from San Fernando.  Elected as the first President of ASJA Inc.  He was Urdu/Hindi interpreter in the courts and the first Muslim Divorce Officer.  Imam Hosein was a member of the Indian Advisory Council.  He visited India in 1934 as a delegate of the Muslim Community of Trinidad in search of a qualified Moulvi. At the end of 1935 Syed Hosien arrived with Nazir Ahmed Simab Munshi Fazli.  He was responsible for spearheading the debate against Qadianism with Moulvi Ameer Ali.  Syed Mohammed Hosein also served as Imam of Jama Masjid in San Fernando

PASS PRESIDENT OF ASJA

Haji Abdool Sattar from Princes Town. Proprietor and businessman. He served as Treasurer, Vice President and President of ASJA, the latter for seven years to 1990. He donated the land and built the Princes Town ASJA Primary School as well as the Jama Masjid on High Street, Princes Town. He also supervised the building of the San Fernando ASJA Primary School.

PASS PRESIDENT OF ASJA

Al Haj Dr. Mansoor Ibrahim from Port of Spain.  He is a Medical Practioner (Gynaecologist) by profession.  He was a house scholarship winner at the Progressive Educational Institute in Port of Spain, attended Queens Royal College and obtained his MBBS degree at St Andrews University in Scotland.  Served as a member of the Inter-Religious Organization (IRO),  the Muslim Coordinating Council (MCC) and a serving Muslim Marriage Officer.  Served as ASJA's President from 1990 to 2000.  He was awarded the Chaconia Medal Silver in 1997 by the President of Trinidad & Tobago for Community Service.

PASS PRESIDENT OF ASJA

Haji Yacoob Ali a pharmacist, Attorney at Law, businessman.  He is the son in-law of Haji Shafik Rahaman.  Haji Yacoob served for many years as President of the Pharmacy Board,  President of National Youth Council and President of TTMYO.  He has served on ASJA Education Board for close to four decades both as its past Secretary and current Chairman.  On ASJA's Executive he has held many positions including First Vice President and currently President of ASJA.
